In April 1966 I received my order for Duke
and I to go to Vietnam. We went back to Lackland
for some training and left for Vietnam in May 1966.
We flew out of Kelly A.B. and arrived in Vietnam 3
or 4 days later. We flew in a C-130 with about 20
handlers and dogs. After we arrived at Ton Son
Nhut we went up to Phan Rang on a C-119, what a
ride. When we arrived at Phan Rang there was
Kennels made up of wooden floors and tent cover to
protect the dogs. We lived next to Kennels in tents
on wooden platforms. We lived away from everyone
else for about 3 months.
|
Our job at Phan Rang was to patrol the
perimeter of the base. We were the first line of
defense for the base. Each dog team worked alone
at night and covered an area about 150 to 200
yards long, from the perimeter road to the fence
line.
